A North Dakota visitor

This cattle egret was feeding on insects recently near Rice Lake. Cattle egrets originated in Africa and made their first appearance in the U.S. in Florida in the 1950s. Today, their primary range is the southeastern U.S., but they also are somewhat common in California. Occasionally cattle egrets venture far from their common range, particularly during spring and fall, but they remain an oddity in North Dakota.
