Robert P. Ganskop, 79, Flaxton, died Thursday, May 1, 2014, in a Kenmare hospital.

Robert Paul Ganskop was born Dec. 18, 1934, to Herman and Minnie Ganskop, at the family farm near Northgate. He attended eight years of elementary school in Northgate and four years of high school in Flaxton, graduating in 1952. He attended Dunwoody Technical Institute in Minneapolis, where he trained as a machinist.

He was inducted into the Army in October 9, 1957, and received an honorable discharge Oct. 6, 1958.

Robert was united in marriage to Alice Kirkelie on Sept. 13, 1958. They farmed and ranched with Robert's dad and brother near Northgate.

Over the years, Robert worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, and was a member of the Carpenter's Local Union. Bob was the neighborhood "builder" and "fixer." He repaired fridges, freezers, televisions, and radios. He was a mechanic, veterinarian, conservationist, beekeeper, clockmaker, woodworker, and tool maker. In short, he was a general engineer.

Robert's Christian faith was the center of his life. He had a kind, generous, larger-than-life personality. He lived by the phrase, "we'll figure something out," and his family knew there was no problem he wouldn't at least try to solve.

Robert was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Flaxton, where he served as an elder and congregational chairman. He served on the Flaxton School Board, the Farmers Union Elevator Board in Bowbells, Farmers Union Oil Co. Board in Kenmare, as Richland Township supervisor and Thrivent branch officer.

He is survived by: his wife, Alice, of 55 years; daughters, Lisa (Martin) Bjergaard, Mandan, Laura Vorhes, of Crystal, Minn., Ruth (James) Joyce, West Fargo; grandchildren, Paul Bjergaard, David (Swarnali) Bjergaard, Kristen Bjergaard, Daniel Bjergaard, Gabriel Bjergaard and Anna Joyce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Arthur; and son-in-law, Martin Vorhes.

We aren't sure what life will be like as we move forward, but we are sure we can follow Bob's advice. We will figure something out.
