Donald L. Irey, 84, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Ravenwood Nursing Home in Waterloo. A memorial service was held at Faith Lutheran Church, Waterloo, on Monday, April 28.
Donald Lester Irey was born May 21, 1929, to Frank and Elsie (Ladd) Irey, in Bottineau County. He proudly served in the Air Force. Don was united in marriage to Elaine Greenfield on June 2, 1966, in Minot. He farmed most of his life near Granville, and did auto body work. He travelled around the U.S. with his wife in their 5th wheel; they visited every state. He enjoyed making folk art, antique cars (he built a street rod), playing golf, dancing, and putzing around. He was an inventor, an artist and did organic farming before it was popular.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine, 2126 Cord Ridge, Waterloo, IA, 50701; children, Joan (Randy) Bailey, of Minot; Al (Renee) Irey, of Boone, Iowa; and Gil (Kris) Irey, of Waterloo; grandchildren, Shawn (Ashley) Bailey, Nicole Robinson, Brandon (Alisha) Bailey, Jamee (Derek) Bohlen, Jake (Shannyn) Irey; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Leo Irey, David Irey, Tom Irey, and Leona Kuhn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, June, Ruth and Betty; one brother, Garnet Frost; and a grandson, Mike Robinson.
