Marie Elvira (Lystad) Sanderson, 91, Bismarck, died April 23, 2014, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Services will be held Monday, April 28, at 10 a.m. at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with Rev. Gary Heaton officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held today, April 27, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Marie was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Gardena, N.D., the daughter of Hans Christian Lystad and Alice (Bakken) Lystad. She attended country school and graduated from Bottineau High School. She attended Bottineau School of Forestry (now Dakota College at Bottineau) and Minot State Teachers College, (now Minot State University), where she obtained her teacher's certificate. She taught school in Willow City, where she met the love of her life, Carl Sanderson. Marie married Carl Jerome Sanderson on Oct. 3, 1948, in Bottineau.

Marie's story is one of family and selfless sacrifice. She understood the simple core values that make a successful and wonderful life and was very supportive and patient with others, as they found their own paths toward those values. She was an ideal wife, mother, grandmother, sibling, and friend. Marie, along with her husband Carl, created together an amazing family tree with unshakable roots, with immense love, values, a strong sense of magic and wonder, and memories and traditions that will continue on forever from generation to generation.

Mama and Papa are together once again and they will never be forgotten here on earth. We were all lucky enough to have them around long enough to have their wisdom and support guide us to a point where we could take it ourselves; further evidence of their continued vow to protect and nurture the tree that they so carefully planted. The fruits of their love will be forever cherished and shared.

Marie is survived by: her daughters, Alice Rae (Jerry) Dorsher, Bismarck, and Nancy Sanderson, Minneapolis, Minn.; grandson, Bradley Dorsher, Bismarck; brother, Kenneth (Elaine) Lystad, of Stanley, N.D.; brother-in-law, Gerald Sanderson, Rugby, N.D.; sister-in-law, Ella Sanderson, Marshall, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; and her brothers, Lyle (Muriel) Lystad and Willie (Joyce) Lystad.
