Whether you come for the sweet sounds of some Minot's best voices raised in song or for the ice cream that follows, the Minot Chamber Chorale's Choral Showcase and Ice Cream Social will be a treat for the senses. The concert and social will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 2209-4th Ave. NW, in Minot. There is no admission charge for the concert or the ice cream social, just a free will offering.
"St. Mark's is beautiful facility and it sounds very (good)," said Bob Demke, director of the Chamber Chorale. "Acoustically, it is just a wonderful place to sing."
The concert include a wide range of musical styles, said Demke. The first half of the concert will begin with a group of sacred works including a piece by Haydn, "Alleluia" by Ralph Manuel, "Pacem" by Lee Dengler, the traditional hymn "Abide With Me," and "De Profundis" which is based on Psalm 130. The first half will conclude with a Nigerian folk song, "Mojuba."
"For this concert, I'm not looking for a universal theme," Demke said. "I am looking for good choral music that we normally don't get to sing at our other concerts. There is an awful lot of great choral literature that just doesn't fit into our other concerts. We have some really great literature that is really a lot of fun to sing in this concert."
The second half will kick off with the well-known American folk song "Shenandoah"; followed by another African piece, "Jabula Jesu"; "Weep No More" which is based on a poem John Keats; a spiritual, "Wade in the Water"; "Through the Eyes of a Child"; and "The Blessing," a piece that was recorded by the Celtic Women.
"I really think that someone who comes to listen will find this a very enjoyable concert," Demke said. "You are going to find music that ranges from very traditional classical music to things that are more modern. The first part of the concert is more serious. There will be a couple of pieces that are more traditional choral literature. We have a very moving arrangement of "Abide with Me" that I think people will enjoy immensely. Then we are also going to do a couple of African pieces. There is a tremendous interest in that culture. We will finish with some folk songs and lighter literature so there will be something for everyone."
