One man died in an accident involving a semi and a passenger van Thursday evening outside of Stanley.
North Dakota Highway Patrol said that the 87-year-old driver of a 2006 Dodge Caravan was traveling south on N.D. Highway 8 from one Stanley residence to another. A Kenworth semitrailer driven by Calvin Watkins, 47, of Minot, had been stopped on Highway 8, waiting to turn left.
The van's driver failed to stop and struck the truck in the rear. The Dodge sustained severe front-end damage, while the truck sustained minor damage to the rear end of the trailer it was pulling. Though airbags deployed, the van's driver was not wearing his seat belt and died at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured.
The release of the deceased's name is being withheld pending notification of relatives. The crash remains under investigation.
