Robert E. Thompson, 64, of Bismarck, left this world with his loving wife of 43 years by his side on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. His funeral service will be held Friday, April 11, at the Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, at 1 p.m.
Visitation will be held Friday, one hour prior to the service.
Bob, son of James T. and Mary Thompson, was born June 24, 1949, in Watertown, S.D. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D. He entered the Air Force on Feb. 6, 1969. Bob and Wanda were united in marriage on June 20, 1970. From this union, two children were born; son Mark and daughter Kari.
During Bob's 20-year career with the Air Force, the family traveled to multiple locations. They were stationed at Minot Air Force Base twice; Ellsworth AFB in S.D.; Anderson AFB in Guam; Loring AFB in Maine; Dyess AFB in Texas; and Grand Forks AFB. While stationed at Minot AFB the family became residents of Burlington for 33 years.
After retiring as a senior master sergeant, he began his next career as a federal civil service employee for an additional 20 years at Minot AFB.
Bob is survived by: his wife, Wanda; son, Mark (Jenn), of New Baden, Ill.,, and daughter, Kari (Kenneth) Faul, of Max; three grandchildren, Taryn, Derek and Hannah; two brothers of Sioux Falls, S.D., Richard (Mary) and Michael (Patty); and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his father-in-law, Wilbur Omanson.
Memorials may be made to the Kidney Cancer Association in Bob's name.
