Arthur "Art" Alexander, 65, Garrison, died on Monday, March 10, 2014, at his son's home in Beulah after a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Garrison.
Visitation will be held today, March 14, from 3 to 8 p.m., at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Art was born Nov. 22, 1948, in Unity, Maine, to Arthur Sr. and Helen (Gerald) Alexander. After graduating from Mount View High School in Unity, he worked for Pratt Whitney. Art enlisted in the Air Force in 1968 and served until 1976.
On May 10, 1974, Art married Colleen Crawford in Minot. They resided in Minot until 1976, when they moved to Garrison. While living in Garrison, Art worked as a carpenter for a number of years with Great Plains Lumber and at the nearby power plants. Art then went to work for the City of Garrison in maintenance and later became the maintenance supervisor. He worked for the city for more than 20 years. After retiring from the city, he went back to carpentry and worked for JM Construction for a couple of years and then worked individual jobs with his friend, Jay Pease.
Art had many hobbies. Carpentry was as much a hobby as it was work. He also loved to fish and spend time with his buddies. His most cherished time was spent with his grandchildren.
Art is survived by: his sons, Rick (Tammie) Alexander, Beulah, James (special friend, Mindy), Alexander, Garrison; daughter, Casey (Josh) Elgaen, Beulah; grandchildren, Kayleen, Brady and Clarisa Alexander, Nathan Splichal and Jocelyn Alexander, and Kassie Elgaen; mother, Helen Alexander, Unity, Maine; siblings, Judy (Gerald) Trundy, and Lynwood (Marie) Alexander, and Brenda (Gene) Drew, all of Unity, Maine; brothers-in-law, Tom (Mavis) Crawford, Otsego, Minn., Jim (Susan) Crawford, Fargo, and Rich (Karen) Crawford, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen; father, Arthur Sr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Julian "Bud" and Ellen Crawford; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Grover.
