Beavers advance in overtime
NEWARK, Del. - Home-ice advantage meant nothing Saturday evening at the ACHA National Tournament.
The ninth-seeded Minot State men's club hockey team ousted the host, No. 8 seed Delaware, with a 3-2 overtime victory at Fred Rust Arena.
The Beavers play top-seeded Arizona State at 6 p.m. today in the quarterfinals.
"I'm proud of how the boys battled tonight," MSU coach Wade Regier said in a press release. "Playing in front of their home crowd was very difficult as they had all the momentum."
MSU's Josh Rutherford netted an unassisted goal at 4:26 of overtime to advance the Beavers. Rutherford scored two goals on the night and Brett Nespor added the third.
"Josh stepped up at the right time and made a big-time play," Regier said. "Now we need to turn our focus to No. 1 Arizona State. They are a great team, but we can play with them."
Wyatt Waselenchuck stopped 31 shots to notch the victory for MSU, which held a 49-33 advantage in shots.
The Beavers lost their lone meeting with Arizona State this season, a 2-1 defeat in Tempe, Ariz., on Nov. 7.
