Edward A. Schwan, 88, Karlsruhe, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, in a Bismarck hospital.

Edward "Ed" Alex Schwan was born on Oct. 1, 1925, the oldest son of Alex and Anna (Klein) Schwan, in Karlsruhe. He was raised and educated in Karlsruhe.

Ed was united in marriage to Barbara Abrahamson on Jan. 21, 1953. They farmed and raised their family on the Schwan farm near Karlsruhe. Barbara passed away in November 2003. Following her death, he continued to live on the farm in Karlsruhe before moving to Bismarck in January 2013, where he resided at St. Gabriel's Community.

Ed was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lake George Sportsmen's Club, and Harvey Eagles Club.

Ed was a self-taught musician who played trumpet, trombone and drums. He played in a band for many years and enjoyed playing trumpet for many events. Ed was a happy go lucky man and loved a good joke. He enjoyed bingo, baseball, basketball, cards and socializing.

Edward is survived by: his children, Susanne (Bruce) Lennick, Newman Lake, Wash., Steven (Janet) Schwan, Thomas (Julie) Schwan, Adrian (Sandy) Schwan, Christopher Schwan, all of Bismarck, William Schwan, Dillingham, Alaska, Alex (Dee Ann) Schwan, San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; siblings, Isabelle Carlson, Loretta Abel, Beatrice Aberle, Jerry Schwan, Patrick Schwan, and Audrey Alman. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Anna; wife, Barbara; son, Timothy Schwan; two brothers, Everett and Myron; and three sisters, Alice Keller, Corrine Noren, and Victoria Kuncir.

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, March 3, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe.

Burial: Will take place at a later date in 2014 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Karlsruhe.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, however, friends may sign a guest register Sunday, March 2, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil prayer service: Sunday at 7 p.m., in Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.
