MSU hires Thomas as defensive coordinator
On Wednesday, Minot State head football coach Todd Hoffner announced his first coaching hire, selecting Byron Thomas as the Beavers' defensive coordinator.
Thomas spent the past year as the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Culver-Stockton College, an NAIA school in Canton, Mo.
"I am very happy for the Beaver Nation as we have acquired a tremendous person, recruiter and coach," Hoffner said in a press release.
Before his time at Culver-Stockton, he spent one season at Texas A&M working with cornerbacks and safeties as a graduate assistant under Kevin Sumlin. He also spent one season as a graduate assistant at South Florida under current Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mark Snyder.
"We are going to work so hard to put a product on the field that everybody can take such pride in," Thomas said. "This defense will pride itself on being fast and aggressive. We will have an attack-first, ask-questions-later mentality in everything we do."
Thomas, a native of Palmdale, Calif., started his coaching career at St. Cloud State, helping develop two all-conference running backs for the Huskies. He played four seasons at University of South Dakota where Hoffner was the offensive coordinator garnering the Coyotes' defensive most valuable player honors as a senior in 2008.
"Coach Thomas will be a very valuable asset to the future of Beavers football," Hoffner said. "In addition to Byron's great character, he has a proven track record of motivating young men to excel on the football field."
