FARGO (AP) - A North Dakota man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl beginning about three years after he was released from prison for killing his infant child.
Prosecutors had recommended a 20-year prison term for Erick McKay, of Devils Lake, but U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson ruled that special circumstances warranted a stiff sentence.
Erickson called McKay a danger to children and to the community. The judge had earlier sent notice to both sides that he was contemplating a sentence above federal guidelines.
McKay was previously convicted in state court in 2002 of shaking his 7-week-old son to death and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
McKay had pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact.
A federal public defender could not be immediately reached for comment.
