Lowell C. Haugen

Lowell C. Haugen, 70, of Stanley, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in a Stanley hospital.

Lowell was born March 2, 1943, in Williston, to Arthur and Martha (Hanson) Haugen. He was raised on the family farm near Alamo. He attended a local country school and graduated in 1961 from Alamo High School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On June 6, 1962, Lowell entered the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was stationed stateside as a surveyor until his honorable discharge on June 5, 1964.

Lowell returned to Williston, where he worked for Reep Motor and Montana Dakota Utilities. He moved to Stanley and continued working for MDU, as a gas serviceman, until retiring after 32 years. He then worked for Northrop Grumman, Dressor Oil, and Mountrail County Soil Conservation.

Lowell was united in marriage to Deanna Hauschulz on July 19, 1974, in Cando. They made their home, with their two children, in Stanley for 39 years.

Lowell was patriotic and civic-minded. He was very social and enjoyed visiting with people. He was active in and a member of many groups including Jaycees, Stanley Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Eagles and the Moose Lodge. He was a proud member of the Charles Hartman American Legion Post of Stanley. He also participated in Toastmasters and Norsk Hostfest.

Always a collector, he liked browsing second-hand stores, pawn shops and flea markets for treasures. He collected license plates. He loved his 1951 Ford, spending time in his back garage and at his hobby farm near Ross, and playing cards with his friends. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He will be greatly missed by his family and grandchildren, whom he cherished.

Lowell is survived by: his wife, Deanna, of Stanley; son, Darren Haugen (Mindy), of New Rockford; daughter, Donna Simpson (Eric), of Stanley; grandchildren, Parker Haugen, and Erika, Drew and Gunnar Simpson; mother-in-law, Frances Hauschulz, of Stanley; brothers, Mervin Haugen and Ron Haugen, both of Alamo, Milt Haugen (Lorraine), of Minot, and Greg Haugen, of Williston; sisters, Phyllis Larson, Jan Whritenour and Beverly Brown (Walt), all of Williston, and Shirley Gardner (Charles), of Bismarck; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Haugen; and nephew, Gene Larson.

Funeral: Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 11 a.m., in American Lutheran Church, Stanley.

Visitation: Today, Jan. 31, from noon to 6 p.m., in Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.

Interment: Fairview Cemetery, Stanley.
