Edward Niess, 84, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, in a Minot hospital.

Edward Niess Sr. was born on July 1, 1929, at the home of his parents, Frank and Elizabeth (Stach) Neiss, in Pierce County, near Silva.

He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Rosedale Township in Pierce County, completing eighth grade. He helped his family farm, did many odd jobs and played in bands until April 27, 1951, when he was drafted into the Army and was shipped to Korea as an active-duty soldier during the war. After his discharge on Jan. 28, 1953, as a corporal, Edward returned home again farming, playing the drums in bands and doing odd jobs.

On June 1, 1954, Edward married Helen Scherr at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Balta. They had eight children. Ed and Helen were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this summer.

Edward owned Ed's Standard Service in Balta for a time. He moved to Devils Lake to work for 7-Up Bottling Co. and soon transferred to Minot. Always doing some type of woodwork for people in his spare time, he was hired on at Minot Sash & Door. Soon he was a part owner of the company and they expanded to a new location east of Minot. They purchased a house at 108-18th St. NW in Minot, where a good portion of the yard was a garden.

In 1974 he retired from full-time cabinet making and purchased a farm near Sawyer. A love that would never leave him, he and Helen raised chickens, pigs, cattle and field crops. Edward entered a nursing home in 2010 and passed away in Trinity Hospital in Minot surrounded by his family.

Edward was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Minot. He was a former member of the Elks, Eagles, Moose, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all Minot, and a lifetime member of the Minot Knights of Columbus.
