Dennis Emmel, 77, Sherwood, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in a Minneapolis hospital.

Dennis Ralph Emmel was born Jan. 23, 1936, a son of Herbert and Tina (Wisdahl) Emmel, on the family farm in rural Norma. He was raised and educated in Norma.

In January 1956, Dennis entered the Army, and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va. He was honorably discharged in January 1958. Following his discharge he returned to the family farm and assisted his dad and brother.

Dennis was united in marriage to JoAnn Brannon on Nov. 8, 1958, in Alexandria, Va. They made their home on the family farm near Sherwood where Dennis farmed and ranched. In 1969, Dennis received the Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year Award. Dennis remained active with the farm his entire life.

Dennis enjoyed working on the farm, hunting, spending time with his family and helping others. He was a member of Stafford Baptist Church and attended Faith Baptist Church. Dennis was also a member of the board of Citizens United to Save the Valley. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and will be missed by all that knew him.

Dennis is survived by: wife of 55 years, JoAnn, Sherwood; children, Debbie (Al) Erickson, Minot, Jeff (Jeanne) Emmel, Milliken, Colo., and Michele (Mark) Nelson, Kenmare; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Josh) Haag, Minot, Erika Emmel, Ally Emmel and Dakota Bagbey, all of Colorado, Ashley Helmers and Clay Nelson, both Bismarck, and Kylee Nelson, Kenmare; two great-grandchildren, Alexa and Denlin Haag; siblings, Annie (Roger) Jensen, Kenmare, Eunice Gilseth, Loveland, Colo., Larry (Virginia) Emmel, Kenmare, Beverly (Steve) Bernston, Tacoma, Wash., Duane (Peggy) Emmel, Moorhead, Minn., and Doyle (Nancy) Emmel, Mandan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Darrel; grandson-in-law, Lee Helmers; and two brothers-in-law, John Gilseth and Leon Durbin.

Funeral service: Monday, Jan. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare.

Burial: at a later date in the spring of 2014 at Rosehill Cemetery, rural Norma.

Visitation: Sunday, Jan. 26, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.
