Harold Strasser

Harold Strasser, 92, of Stanley, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, in a Stanley nursing home.

Harold Strasser was born Dec. 13, 1921, in Cooperstown, and later moved with his parents and sisters to Valley City, where he graduated from high school in 1940. He completed his freshman year at Valley City State University. World War II intervened, and he spent two of the next three years in the Signal Army Air Corps on the island of Sanak in the Aleutian Islands. After his discharge, he returned to Valley City and completed his degree requirements and graduated with a bachelor of science degree.

In 1947 he and Amy Nelson were married at Valley City. In 1951, they moved to Cando where he taught science for two years. During the first oil boom in August 1953 he and his family moved to Williston, where he was employed for nine years by a construction company and helped to build 450 homes. In 1959, he and three other men formed the Stanley Lanes Corporation, which he managed.

In 1967, he began teaching science and later computers at Stanley High School. He was an avid bowler and golfer and co-headed a drive to obtain grass greens at the Stanley Golf Course. He also was past commander of the Stanley American Legion Post 134. During the summer months, Harold constructed 10 homes in the Stanley area. Harold and Amy retired from teaching in 1986 and spent the next 26 years enjoying the winter months in Arizona. The last year and one half, Harold resided in the Mountrail County Bethel Home in Stanley.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Mary Strasser; sisters, Helen (Norbert) Kuzel, Marion Strasser and Ruth Strasser; and great-granddaughters, Tresha and Taylee Sinclair.

Those who shared his life: wife, Amy (Nelson) Strasser, Stanley; daughters, Susan (Dave) Polfliet, New Brighton, Minn., and Barbara (Dave) Guttormson, Tioga; sons, Bill (Val) Strasser, Underwood, and Steve (Yvonne) Strasser, Bemidji, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Andrea (Will) Richards, Heather (Zaw) Win, Scott, Troy, Brooke and Kelsey Guttormson, Shayla (Trevor) Sinclair, Angela (Craig) Jackson and Tracy (Nick) Lee; 12 great-grandchildren, Connor and Riley Richards, Becket and Caleb Win, Tresha and Taylee Sinclair (deceased) and Treston and Truvy Sinclair, Daniel, Isaiah and Levi Jackson and Kirk Lee.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Stanley.

Burial is in Fairview Cemetery in Stanley.

Visitation is Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be given to the organization of their choice.
