Dorothy Michelson, 86, Little Falls, Minn., formerly of Martin, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at a Little Falls nursing home.

Dorothy Hatlestad was born in Toronto, S.D., on Oct. 17, 1927, to Elmer and Bertha Hatlestad. She was raised in the Velva area, graduating in 1945 from Velva High School. She graduated from Minot Business Institute in June 1946. After graduation, Dorothy was employed by Verendrye Electric Co-op in Velva where she worked until she married Arthur Michelson on Sept. 18, 1949. They settled into married life on Art's farm west of Martin. There they became a team who raised three children (Eugene, Myron and Renee) while also raising cattle, chickens and bountiful crops of grain.

Dorothy was an energetic, organized and social person who was on Martin's election board, collected farm census information and poured endless talents into her church. At the Martin United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school and Bible school, led the youth group, performed special music, was Sunday school superintendent and participated in United Methodist Women, Cemetery Committee, Administrative Board and more.

Dorothy's brilliant mind and boundless energies hungered for a greater challenge so in 1970 she joined the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation team at their Harvey office. She proudly served as their clerk-typist for 16 years, retiring in 1986.

In retirement, Art and Dorothy enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada. They loved taking their children and grandchildren on adventures, educating them about geographic sites and the beauty of God's creation. Dorothy took great joy in chronicling travels and family togetherness through photography.

Dorothy loved serving her family, friends, community and God. She had a quick sense of humor and outgoing nature. She loved to make people smile and laugh. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Dorothy is preceded in death by: Art, her husband of 60 years; her parents; brothers, Howard, Elmo and Carl; and infant sister, Ada.

She is survived by: her children, Gene (Dawn) of Mali, Africa, Myron (Barb) of Wahpeton and Renee (Glen Palmer) of Little Falls, Minn.; grandchildren, Ben (Brenda) Michelson, Josie (Noel) Powell, Gabriel Michelson, Derrick Michelson, Ashley Michelson and Daniel Palmer; great-grandchildren, Adia, Ember, Davin and Jacey Powell; sisters, Betsy Herrel, Ida (Bob) Hollinger and Ruth Belzer; sister-in-law, Billie Hatlestad; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church of Harvey.

Burial will be at the Velva City Cemetery, Velva.

Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 3, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.
