Sept. 9, 1918-Dec. 30, 2013

Minot Daily News

Erma M. Kitzman, 95, Minot, formerly of Deering, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, in her home.

Erma Marie (Smith) Kitzman was born Sept. 9, 1918, to Merle and Matilda (Simmons) Smith in McHenry County, the first of 11 children. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Deering High School.

She married Arville Kitzman on Feb. 5, 1942, and together they raised six children. Arville and Erma lived and worked on her family's farm where they had milk cows, small grains, large gardens and rows of potatoes. She and Arville travelled to many reunions of the 96th Infantry Division, called the Deadeyes. They farmed until 1982 when they retired and in 1985 they moved to Minot where she remained until 2011 when she lost her home to the Minot flood. She moved to Somerset Court in August 2011, where she was treated with the utmost kindness and respect.

Erma was an avid reader, loved fishing and camping, embroidery, playing bingo and the occasional casino trip. She especially loved family get-togethers, family reunions and holidays. Her sense of humor was intact to the very last and her giggle will never be forgotten.

Erma was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary, Deering Lutheran Church, Little Deep Club and "part owner" of Publishers Clearing House and Harlequin Romances uffda! She passed away at her home in Somerset Court, after a three-month illness with her family continually by her side. Mom, we love you and will miss you forever.

The family would like to thank everyone who visited, brought food, called, sent flowers and support. Your kindness and caring was appreciated by all of us. Thank you especially to Trinity Hospice and Somerset Court staff for the loving care and support you gave mom.

Erma is survived by: her children, Leslie (Anna) Kitzman, Deborah (Jack) Long, Joan (Dale) Brabandt, Richard (Colleen) Kitzman and Jay (Maxine) Kitzman; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister; eight sisters-in-law; two brothers; two brothers-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Erma was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Arville; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Clayton Mattern; one great-grandson; three sisters; four brothers; two sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.

Funeral Service: Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Burial: Little Deep Cemetery, Upham, in the spring of 2014.

Visitation: Friday, Jan. 3, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
