Beulah June Gaarder, 96, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell, S.D.
She was born Sept. 23, 1917, to Alfred and Sena Opoien in Pekin. She attended school at Pekin and graduated in 1936. She married Otto Gaarder on July 3, 1939. They raised seven children while living in Karlsruhe, Heimdal and Fessenden, finally moving to Minot in 1969. After retiring they did much traveling, sharing most of their time between North Dakota and Arizona.
Beulah was a member of First Lutheran Church of Minot, and also an active member of the Moose Lodge, where she was a senior regent and enjoyed dancing and bingo. Beulah was also an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by: three sisters, Margaret Mannie, of Washington state; Marjorie Thorsen, Fargo, and Marlys Matheason, of Minnesota; seven children, Robert (Jeaneva) Gaarder, Junction City, Kan., Patricia Rolle (Eugene), of Mitchell, S.D., Ronald (Linda) Gaarder, Tucson, Ariz., James (Barbara) Gaarder, Bismarck, Gail Cochran (Robert), San Tan Valley, Ariz., Murrey Gaarder and Mark (Jeanna) Gaarder, all of Minot; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; siblings, Amy Howell, Wallace Opoien, Bernard Opoien, James Opoien, Allan Opoien, Ardis Nilep and Shirley Haas.
A memorial service is planned for July in Minot.
