Dorothy M. O'Connell, 95, Minot, formerly of Lansford, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, in a Minot medical center.

Dorothy Marie Zimny was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Mountrose Township, near Lansford, a daughter of Paul and Agnes (Voitis) Zimny. She was raised on a farm in the Lansford area and attended a rural elementary school in Blaine and then Lansford school.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Basil O'Connell on May 29, 1939, in Bottineau. They made their home on the family farm in Bottineau County, near Glenburn, where they raised their six children. They moved to Lansford in 1969, and then to Glenburn in 1974. In 1985, they retired and moved to Minot. Basil passed away on April 9, 1987.

Dorothy enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, reading, and crossword puzzles.

She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church and ladies aid in Glenburn, St. John's Catholic Church and ladies aid in Lansford, and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and the St. Ann's Altar Society in Minot. Dorothy volunteered at Our Lady of Grace for 20 years, Edgewood Vista and Trinity Nursing Home, all Minot. She was a member of the County Commissioners Auxiliary and served as treasurer in 1968 and 1969 and was president during the 1971 year, in Grand Forks.

Dorothy is survived by: her sons, David (Ann) O'Connell, Lansford, Gary (Jan) O'Connell, Henderson, Nev., and Lawrence (Deb) O'Connell, Minot; daughters, Peggy (Carl) McIlroy, Minot, Joyce (Mike) Dupay, Minot, and Mary Ann (Duane) Zwinger, Carrington; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond Zimny, of California, and Paul (Carol) Zimny, of Cyrus, Minn.; sisters, Mary Growe, of Oklahoma, and Sister Agnes Marie, Valley City; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Basil; brothers, Isadore (Jean) Zimny and Ralph Zimny; grandson, Paul O'Connell; granddaughter, Miley Dupay; and daughter-in-law, Anadine O'Connell.

Memorials: Are preferred to the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church food pantry in Minot.

Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, from 9 a.m. until service time, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Rosary: Thursday, 9:30 a.m., at the church.

Burial: Will take place in the spring at Lansford Cemetery, Lansford.
