Each week, The Minot Daily News features a roundup of notable performances, news and results from teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Here's what happened last week:
- The University of Mary football team introduced Josh Kotelnicki as its new head coach Monday. Kotelnicki replaces Myron Schulz, who resigned after 15 years with the Marauders.
The new U-Mary coach knows a thing or two about winning. Kotelnicki won a Division II title as a player and has coached at FBS, FCS and Division II programs. His most recent job was as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at the University of North Dakota.
Kotelnicki was a starting outside linebacker and team captain on UND's national championship team in 2001. The following year, Kotelnicki began his coaching career as an assistant offensive line coach at Murray State University. He's also made stops at Truman State University and Kansas State.
- Bemidji State senior guard Jake Schalow was named NSIC Men's Basketball Player of the Week following a career-high 30-point performance against Minnesota Crookston on Friday.
The 6-foot-4 guard finished 10 of 13 from the field and 7 of 8 from behind the arc in the 103-61 victory against the Golden Eagles. His seven 3-pointers and 87.5 percentage from long range are single-game highs in NSIC league games this season. Schalow added three assists, three rebounds and an assist.
- BSU swept the basketball honors this week as senior center Kate Warmack was named NSIC Women's Basketball Player of the Week after recording her seventh double-double of the season - tied for the most in the NSIC.
Warmack - a 6-2 senior from East Grand Forks, Minn. - recorded 24 points and 17 rebounds in a 75-66 victory against Minnesota Crookston on Friday. She went 9-for-16 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line. Her 17 rebounds tied a career high set earlier this season.
- Minnesota State-Mankato freshman Darick Vancura recorded a major decision and a tech fall over the weekend and garnered NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors.
The 174-pounder defeated Minot State University's Tiger Paasch by a 14-2 major decision on Friday. The 18th-ranked Mavericks defeated the Beavers 31-9. Vancura finished the weekend with a 17-2 tech fall victory against U-Mary's Riley Nagel. Mankato posted a 30-12 dual win over the Marauders. Vancura improved to 20-5 this season.
