Joseph McSweeny

Joseph McSweeny, 93, of Stanley, formerly of Portland, Ore., died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, in a Stanley nursing home. A family service and rosary will be today, Dec. 12, at Springan Funeral Home, Stanley. Visitation is today from noon to 5 p.m., at the funeral home. A funeral service and burial will be next week in Portland, Ore.

Joe was born on Nov. 10, 1920, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He was one of seven children and was the last living member of his immediate family. Joe has 3 grown children; son, Larry, of Portland, Ore., daughter, Erin (John) Anderson, of Stanley; and daughter, Kathleen McCallister, Portland, Ore.; and sister-in-law, Goldie McSweeney, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Joe has 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Joe graduated from high school and one year of business school in Canada. He served in the Royal Canadian Army from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed in the Caribbean and was honorably discharged.

Joe married Teresa Mary Leone in 1946 and in 1952 they moved to the United States. Teresa died in 1972. Joe remarried twice but was preceded in death by both Juanita Riggins and Leona Bridget O'Brian.

Joe worked in the car sales business most of his life in California and Oregon. Before retiring at age 70, he worked for Wentworth Chevrolet in Portland, Ore., for 20 years in their Fleet Sales Division and received recognition for being their top salesman.

Joe moved from Oregon to Minot in July of 2012 and to Stanley in July of 2013.

Joe will always be remembered for his wit and sense of humor.

Funeral mass: Will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Portland, Ore., with Recitation of Holy Rosary preceding the mass.

Interment: Will be at the Rose City Cemetery Mausoleum, Portland, Ore.

Arrangements in Oregon will be handled by Zeller's Chapel of the Roses, Portland, Ore.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers it is Joe's desire that donations be made to The Grotto, the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, P.O. Box 20008, Portland, OR 97294.
