Joyce E. Ostlund

Joyce E. Ostlund, 98, Kenmare, formerly of Tolley, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at a Minot hospital.

Joyce was born on June 5, 1915, in Minot, the daughter of George N. and Jennie Martin. She was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1933. After graduation she attended Minot State Teachers College, where she earned her teaching certificate in 1941.

Joyce was united in marriage to Harry Ostlund on Sept. 23, 1944, on the Ostlund family farm. She taught country school in Ward and Emmons counties for two years, high school in Renville County for two years, one year in McLean County and lastly was a substitute teacher in Tolley for 40 years.

Joyce was a member of the Tolley Senior Citizens, the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tolley, where she served as a board member, Sunday school teacher and the church pianist.

Survivors: children, Mary Jean (Don) Reese, of Eunice, N.M., Alan (Mona) Ostlund, Shasta Lake, Calif., Nancy Volkman, Oakdale, Minn., and Evan Ostlund, Tolley; grandchildren, Dawn Williams, Jeri Menssen, Melissa Dimock, Camille Graves, Chad Ostlund, Sean Ostlund, Derrick Ostlund, Jessica Grindeland and Galen Reese; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, who passed away in 2001; grandsons, Darin and Michael Ostlund; great-grandson, Austin Menssen; brother, Vern Martin; and sisters, Mona Martin and Jean Jackson.

Memorials: Are preferred to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tolley.

Funeral service: Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at 1 p.m., at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tolley.

Visitation: Friday, Dec. 13, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Burial will take place in the spring at McKinney Cemetery, rural Tolley.
