Mavis Bruce

SHERWOOD Mavis Delene Bruce, 82, Sherwood, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at a Mohall nursing home.

She was born Oct. 15, 1931, near Flaxton, the oldest of seven children born to Gerhardt and Mildred (Yahn) Zacharias. The family moved to Bowbells in 1937 and she graduated from Bowbells High School in 1949. She worked at the Bowbells Cafe for five years while attending school. After graduation, she worked at the ASC Office in the courthouse in Bowbells.

Mavis married Forrest Bruce in April 1950. They made their home on the Bruce farm until the fall of 1967, when they moved into Sherwood. She operated the Sherwood Cafe for a few years in the 1970s.

Mavis was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Sherwood, and was involved with Homemakers, 4-H and ladies aid.

Family: husband of 63 years, Forrest Bruce, Sherwood; daughter, Virginia (Jim) McAdoo, Riverdale; son, Barry (Jill) Bruce, West Fargo; son-in-law, Lee (Bev) Ferguson, Billings, Mont.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Nelson, Flaxton, Harriet Heth, Lignite, and Gail (Bill) Schug, Sioux City, Iowa; brothers, Ed (Betty) Zacharias, Salem, Ore., Don (Sharon) Zacharias, Tioga; brother-in-law, Ken Thompson, of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; daughter, Carrie; son-in-law, Craig Keith; sister, Patricia Thompson; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Ivan Nelson, Jerry Heth, and Evan and Esther Bruce; and nephew, Darrell Bruce.

Funeral: Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Sherwood.

Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, rural Kenmare.

Visitation: Wednesday, 11 a.m. until the service time, at the church.
