Esther Lily McNabb-Steen, 93, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Glenburn, died Nov. 24, 2013, in a Phoenix care facility, where she lived for nearly four years.
Esther was born April 3, 1920, to Christian and Elizabeth Broderson, early homesteaders of rural Glenburn. She was raised on the family homestead, attending school in Glenburn and went on to earn a standard teaching certificate at Minot State Teachers College. She taught in several one-room rural schools prior to her marriage.
Esther married Sylvester McNabb on June 15, 1941, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Florence and Alvin Biberdorf. For about 20 years, Esther and her husband operated a furniture store, Home Mart, in Glenburn. Busy with a growing family, she also taught school in Deering for several years. Esther was also married briefly to Clarence Steen, now deceased. She moved to Phoenix in 1998, where two of her children live.
Esther was a member of Lynch Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Glenburn in her youth and later a very active founding member of Faith Lutheran Church of Glenburn when that satellite congregation was formed. She was also a founding member of Hope Lutheran Church in Glenburn when it was established. She attended American Lutheran Church in Phoenix until her health failed. Her faith and devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, were a source of great comfort to her throughout her life.
Esther was active with Homemakers Club and leader of a 4-H club for many years. She was a founding member of Glenburn Senior Citizens and instrumental in securing funding to build and operate the current structure. She enjoyed preserving the harvest from her large garden, making wine, sewing and quilting. She was proud of her many awards for her entries at flower shows and the county and state fairs including Grand Champion awards for wedding gowns she sewed for two daughters.
Esther is survived by: her children, Sharon (Paul) Jewell, Phoenix, Ariz.; Gary (Sandy) McNabb, Edmond, Okla.; Maureen (Larry) Elliott, Woodbridge, Va.; Julie (Arlo) Gibbs, Las Vegas, Nev.; Neal McNabb (Ryan), Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Sylvester McNabb, her parents, her seven sisters and one great-grandson.
