Wallen Noble Helseth, 89, of Columbus, passed away on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at the Tioga Medical Center in Tioga.
Wallen was born March 28, 1924, on the family farm south of Columbus, the son of Martin and Pauline (Toso) Helseth. He was the youngest of 14 children.
Wallen attended the country school in Leaf Mountain Township until eighth grade. He worked with his father on the farm until he was 19 when his father passed away and Wallen took over the farm operation. He married Dorothy Hagen, of Columbus, on June 8, 1944. They raised five children on the farm, and celebrated their 69th anniversary last summer.
Wallen continued to farm and ranch until 1986 when his son, Roger, assumed primary responsibility for the operation. Wallen's true passion was raising cattle and even when his health began to fail, he remained actively involved in the cattle operation. The only time Wallen ever left the farm for more than two weeks was when he needed surgery in Minneapolis.
Wallen was the township assessor for more than 25 years. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church until its merger with Trinity Lutheran of Columbus where he was a member until his death. He was an avid whist and pinochle player. In the 1970s and 1980s Wallen and Dorothy belonged to a traveling whist team with the Border Triangle Card Club of Larson. In the past 20 years, it wasn't uncommon to see Wallen heading into Columbus on Thursday nights for card games. He was also an avid reader of daily newspapers, county newspapers and the Life and Time magazines. Wallen's neighbors remained an important part of his life. "The Hills" community of Leaf Mountain Township remained important to Wallen as all the neighbors helped one another when someone was in need.
Wallen is survived by: his wife, Dorothy; children, Bob (Laures) Helseth, Tioga, Barry (Candi) Helseth and Kurt (Lori) Helseth, all Minot, Patti (Keith) Denzler, Sheridan, Wyo., Roger (Roberta) Helseth, Powers Lake; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Maggie) Helseth and Kayla (Brandon) Voller, all of Denver, Amy (Justin) Troutt, Todd Helseth and Kari Helseth, all Phoenix, Ariz., Aaron Denzler, Sheridan, Wyo., Lindsay (Blake) Lehmann, Las Vegas, Nev., and Erik Helseth, of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Avin and Margot Helseth, Denver; sister-in-law, Benita Helseth, Lake Stevens, Wash.; and several nephews and nieces.
