Joyce Shuman, 85, Minot, died Saturday, Nov. 23, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Joyce Marie Hoiland was born Jan. 11, 1928, the daughter of Daniel and Olava (Hilmo) Hoiland, in Wolseth. She was raised in Wolseth and educated in Wolseth, Westhope and Minot. She graduated from Minot High School in 1945.

Following her high school graduation, she went to work for City Bakery for a short time and then Northwestern Bell Telephone before beginning her employment as a telephone operator for Northern States Power Co.

Joyce married R.H. "Rod" Shuman May 11, 1951, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot, where she continued her employment at NSP. She retired from there in 1985. Following their retirement, they wintered in Las Vegas and spent the summer months at the cabin at Pouch Bay on Lake Sakakawea.

She was a former member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minot and a member of Bread of Life Lutheran Church in Minot.

Her loving family includes: husband of 61 years, Rod, Minot; daughter, Jill Jones, of Jackson, Tenn.; grandchildren, Nicole (Brian) Guin and Melissa (Jason) Watson; seven great-grandchildren; stepmother-in-law, Evelyn Shuman, Minot; brother-in-law, Morgan Simonson, Minot; sisters-in-law, Mabel Hoiland, Minot, and Jean Burdette, Mesquite, Nev.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mabel Simonson, Dora Johnson, Palma Johnson, Bergetta Evenson, Tilda Torgrimson, and Inga Wolseth; and brothers, Odin, Roy, John, and Maynard Hoiland.

Funeral: Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Bread of Life Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

Visitation: Today, Nov. 25, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: Are preferred to Bread of Life Lutheran Church, Minot.
