Hillis Hugelen, 83, longtime pharmacist and business owner in Velva, passed away Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Hillis Jerome Hugelen was born Sept. 18, 1930, the son of Henry J. and Judith V. (Rognlie) Hugelen in Twin Valley, Minn. At an early age, he moved to Maddock where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Maddock High School in 1948.

Following his high school graduation, he attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he received a B.A. degree in pharmacy in 1952.

Hillis then served a one-year internship as a pharmacist under Homer Hill in Towner before proudly volunteering to serve his country with the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He enlisted on Aug. 6, 1953, serving in Korea and Japan. He was honorably discharged May 25, 1955.

Hillis married Jean A. Skeie on July 10, 1955, at North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leeds. They made their home in Minot, where Hillis worked for Black Drug and later White Drug. Following his retirement, he and Jean enjoyed traveling. They visited Norway, Australia and Alaska. Most of all, they enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.

He was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, and its church council in Velva, was a founding member of the Velva Community Development Corporation, and had served with the Velva Association of Commerce, Velva Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Clinic Board, Aggie Boosters, Ducks Unlimited, Sons of Norway, the Velva Senior Citizens and the Velva American Legion. He was also a member of the National Community Pharmacists Association and the District II Pharmacy Association.
