Carl Donald Solar, 82, Mohall, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at a Minneapolis hospital.
Carl was born May 19, 1931, on a farm north of Hogeland, Mont., to Michael and Marie (Simpson) Solar. Michael and Marie were married in Mohall and started their family on a farm southwest of Mohall in Clay Township. They made the move to Montana in 1928 after hearing of the abundance of good land that was available at reasonable prices. However, the succession of poor crops and low grain prices convinced them to move back to North Dakota in 1939. They bought the old Hurst farm just east of Clay Center School, six miles south of Mohall, where Carl spent most of his childhood. During Carl's teen years the family spent winters in Seattle, where Carl graduated from high school.
Carl served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and saw front line action on a tank in Korea. Recently, he received a citation from the Korean government thanking him for his service to their country. He was honorably discharged in December of 1953. Later, he and his brother, Lawrence, took over management and operation of the Solar farm.
Carl met his future wife, Alice (Coffin) Read, at the nearby Clay Center School, where she was teaching not long after being widowed with two small children, Nan and Dee. On Aug. 28, 1957, Carl and Alice were married at Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall, and had two sons, William "Billy" and Terry. After the children grew up and left home, Carl and Alice continued to live on the farm before moving to an apartment in Mohall, and spending several winters in Las Vegas. Carl continued to live in the Mohall apartment after Alice became a resident at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, where he made daily visits for seven years before her death.
Carl was an avid bowler, lifetime member of the American Legion, and member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.
