Rena Roland, 90, of Bottineau, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at a Bottineau nursing home. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m., at Metigoshe Lutheran Church, Bottineau. Burial will be in the Manger Cemetery of rural Bottineau. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 9 p.m., and Monday, from 10 a.m. to noon, in Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau.

Rena Roland, a daughter of Henry and Nettie (Larson) Larshus, was born April 30, 1923. She was reared in Cordelia Township and graduated from Bottineau High School. In 1941 she moved to Seattle to work for the Boeing Company. After a couple of years Rena returned to Bottineau.

On May 25, 1943, she was married to Ernest Roland at Bottineau. In 1952, Rena began teaching at the school in Hilton District. She attended Minot State Teachers College for several summers to receive her teaching degree. Rena taught at the Dunseith Day School for a time. She then taught at the Bottineau Public Schools until Ernie's health forced her to retire. Ernie passed away June 24, 1994. She continued to make her home on the family farm until ill health forced her to enter the Bottineau Good Samaritan Center.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, participating in many craft shows. Rena had at least three gardens going at one time for many years. She quilted for the world, making quilts for the MS Society, veterans organizations, and family and friends. Rena was a gifted writer, writing books like "The One-Room School," "The Way It Was" and "The First Baptist Church, Bottineau, North Dakota." She also enjoyed writing short stories and assisted on the Turtle Mountain Cook Book.

She is survived by: her daughter, Beth, and her husband, Bob Wock, of Estevan, Sask.; a son, Earl Roland, of Bottineau; grandson, Matthew Roland, of Bottineau; granddaughters, Melissa Dzuba, of Lloydminster, Alberta, Becky Wock and Jessie Wock, both of Estevan, Sask.; great-grandson, Colton Dzuba; great-granddaughter, Taylor Dzuba; sisters, Dorothy Clark, of Bottineau, and Marvel (Manley) Wheeler, of Lakefield, Minn.; and a brother, Lloyd (Orlene) Larshus, of Bottineau.

Rena was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Norman and Leonard; and sister- in-law, Irene Larshus.

Memorials: Are preferred to the Metigoshe Cemetery Association, 2150 Highway 43, Bottineau, ND 58318.
