James Hilbert Schimke died of cancer in his home in California.
Jim was born in Drake and raised in Butte by Hilbert and Ida Schimke. As a boy he grew up helping his dad on their wheat farm. He graduated from Butte Public School. He was an avid sportsman, including baseball and basketball.
After graduation he joined the Army and after his three years he then joined the Army Reserve. He then began the career he loved, radio broadcasting. He spent 50 years in all aspects of broadcasting including 2,500 play-by-play sports broadcasts. Radio took him all over the country, eventually ending up in Palm Springs, Calif. His other true passions were traveling the world visiting over 70 countries, and airplanes. At the age of 70 he went up in a 1940 Stearman, flying in an open cockpit and doing a few loop de loops.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Dori Schimke; sons, Kory Schimke and Jay (Aimee) Schimke; daughters, Kim (Lee) Hunsperger and Heidi (Steve) Morrison; grandchildren, Kristin (John) Hayes, Richard Hunsperger, Ty Schimke and Zach Schimke; and brother, Ronald (Patricia) Schimke.
