Therese ‘Mickie’ Thomas

Therese "Mickie" Thomas, 82, Karlsruhe, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, in the Souris Valley Care Center, Velva.

Therese Helen Schnur was born on Sept. 10, 1931, the youngest daughter of George and Alice (Heuke) Schnur, at home in Chandler, Ind. She was raised on a farm near Evansville, Ind., and educated at St. Joseph Grade School in Evansville. In 1945, she entered high school in Ferdinand, Ind. Therese felt the calling of the Lord, and entered the Monastery of Immaculate Conception Convent in 1948. She received her master's degree in religious education from Seattle University. She served as a Benedictine nun for 20-plus years, teaching at the Ojibwa School in Belcourt. She also assisted in the catechist formation throughout the diocese.

On April 23, 1973, Therese was united in marriage to Daniel "Dan" Thomas in Karlsruhe. Following their marriage, they made their home on the Thomas Family Farm, where she assisted Dan with the operations of the farm and they raised their two children, Paul and Mary.

She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Velva and was very active in many aspects of the church including St. Cecilia's Christian Mothers, CCD teaching, liturgy committee, eucharistic minister and directed the annual Christmas program at the church for several years. Other interests were the Harvey Cursillo, and she was active each year in the World Day of Prayer and her Bible study group. Religious education was a very important part of Mickie's life.

Therese was a very outgoing, spirited person. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking and baking, gardening, watching "Jeopardy" and playing Scrabble. She was even known to correct people when their grammar was spoken incorrectly.

She is survived by: Husband of 40 years, Dan, Velva; son, Paul (Karen) Thomas, Velva; daughter, Mary Cheryl (Richie) Liparulo, Roselle Park, N.J.; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Michael Thomas, of Velva; one sister, Sister Mary Alice Schnur, OSB, Ferdinard, Ind.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Virginia Schnur; Margret Schnur; Dottie Cummins; Joan Schnur; Richard (Vonn) Thomas; Isabelle Trembinski; Irene (Adam) Koble; Delores (Craig) Hansen; Julie (Leroy) Koble; Martha (Larry) Keller; and Kathy (Gene) Repnow. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins also survive.

Therese was preceded in death by her parents, George and Alice; sister, Sister Maura Schnur, OSB; brothers, Edward, Jim, Bill, Joe and Harold Schnur; and brother-in-law, Gerald Thomas.

Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Burial: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.

Visitation: Thursday, Oct. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Vigil prayer service: Thursday, 7 p.m., in the church.
