Kay Bonebrake, 98, of Lake Metigoshe, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, in a Minot nursing home.

Kay Bonebrake, a son of Kay Sr. and Lula (Morris) Bonebrake, was born May 15, 1915, at Angus, Iowa. At a young age, he moved with his family to Minot. He graduated from Minot High School in 1933. During his school years he worked as a soda jerk at a local drug store. He also cleaned and filled glass prescription bottles and delivered them to residents of Minot. After graduation, he worked in the construction of Fort Peck. He later drove truck for Ship Over The Hill trucking from Havre, Mont., to Chicago for a couple of years. He later worked as a foreman for the Winston-Newell Co. in Minot. He married Arline Austreng on Dec. 7, 1940, at Minot. In 1942, he went to work as a fireman on the steam engines for the Great Northern Railway. He later became an engineer for the Burlington Northern Railway. He retired in 1977 after 37 years. Following retirement, they moved to Lake Metigoshe and into the cabin they purchased in 1952.

Kay was a member of the Metigoshe Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the Lake Metigoshe Lions Club and he received the Melvin Jones Award. He was also a 60-year member of the United Transportation Union. Kay was a hands-on guy. He could always be found in his garage working on a variety of projects including woodworking, plumbing, electrical and concrete for himself and for others.

He is survived by: his wife, Arline; daughter, Karen Holman, of Bottineau; sons, Darol (Kathy) Bonebrake, of Minot, and Dale (Linda) Bonebrake, of Minot; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; sister, Rosemary Brooks, of St. Peter, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Arthur Hicks; brothers, William and Richard Bonebrake; sister, Phyllis Joyce; and grandson, Chad Darol Bonebrake.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lake Metigoshe Christian Center.

Burial will be at Fish Lake Cemetery near Lake Metigoshe at a later date.

Visitation will be today, Tuesday, from 1 to 7 p.m., at Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.
