Backed by the voices of the Western Plains Children’s Choir and music of Minot Symphony Orchestra, Joan Haaland Paddock leads the audience in the Norwegian national anthem Tuesday night at the opening of Minot’s 36th annual Norsk Høstfest. Earlier in the evening she had played her lur, a long and holeless horn made from spruce and tightly wrapped in birch bark. Following the opening ceremony, the thousands in attendance were treated to the voice of Frank Sinatra, Jr., the first of Høstfest’s many artists to perform live this week. The evening kicked off this year’s Scandinavian festival, which has been dedicated to the memory of its late founder, Chester Reiten.
