The great blue heron is a bird that frequents North Dakota rivers, lakes and potholes, all of which produce sources of food for the tall birds. Herons feed on frogs, salamanders, small fish and other aquatic life which they swallow whole. This heron was keeping a close eye on shallow water in Deepwater Creek recently. Although herons have a tolerance for cool weather, they eventually migrate south for the winter. Primary destinations include salt water habitat along the southern coastline of the U.S.
