Minot Daily News

Doris Evelyn Ruud, 85, of Parshall, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, in a Minot nursing home.

Doris was born July 4, 1928, on the family farm in Big Bend Township of Mountrail County, the daughter of Rudolph and Cora (Jacobsen) Ostlund. She was raised on the family farm and attended school at Sanish where she graduated from high school in 1946. She then worked at Van Hook where she met George Ruud. They were united in marriage on June 30, 1947, in Sidney, Mont. They made their home on the Ruud homestead, north of Parshall, where they farmed and raised their family. They moved into Parshall in 1989. Following George's death on Dec. 19, 2000, Doris continued to live in Parshall. In October 2012 she moved to Minot to live at the Brentmoor Assisted Living Community.

Doris loved her family very much. She enjoyed being a farmwife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She took great pride in raising and caring for her family and was very close to her siblings. She especially cherished spending time with her grandchildren and followed their activities very closely. In her spare time she was an avid birdwatcher, always planted and cared for her flowers and was a baseball fan, especially the Minnesota Twins. She enjoyed traveling with friends, dancing and playing cards. Every year she looked forward to spending the Fourth of July at their lake cabin to celebrate her birthday with family and friends. She also enjoyed knitting and embroidery, creating special gifts for each grandchild. Throughout her life, Doris had a great love for animals. She loved seeing the newborn calves in the spring and the horses running in the pastures. She welcomed any stray dog or cat that showed up on the farm or at her house in town and especially missed having her cat with her while living at Brentmoor and Trinity Homes. Doris and George were both very active in the community and served on several committees and boards together. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she served on the wedding and funeral committees and the American Legion Auxiliary serving as secretary/treasurer and president for many years. She also was a charter member of the Paul Broste Rock Museum, a member of the Parshall Senior Citizens and Happy Homemakers and supported the Souris Valley Humane Society for many years. May God bless her memory among us.

Doris is survived by: her children, Marcia Lerberg (Alan) of Bismarck, Richard Ruud (JoAnn) of Parshall, Steven Ruud (Karen) of Parshall, Dianne Matzke (Marlyn) of Minot, Kenneth Ruud (Linda) of Parshall, Roger Hovda (Diane) of Parshall and Marlene Hovda of Minot; grandchildren, Matthew Lerberg (Tracy Clough), Justin Lerberg (Rachel Shirik), Marc Lerberg (Bonnie), Angela Berg (Mark Scanson), Nathan Ruud (Darlene), Chelsey Ruud, Jeffrey Ruud (Carmen), James Ruud (Angie), Kevin Ruud (Lisa), TJ Matzke, Ian Matzke, Joy Ruud, Jason Ruud, Raquel Hove (Alan Hayes), Lynn Hove (Anissa), Brandon Hovda, Denise Hovda and David Hovda; 22 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Carol Raymond, of Alta Loma, Calif., Peggy Ostlund, of Billings, Mont., and Marlis Ostlund of Salem, Ore,; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
