Minot Daily News

Patricia J. Horntvedt, 79, Minot, formerly of the Columbus area, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, in a Minot nursing home.

Patricia JoAnne Bourdeau was born Nov. 3, 1933, near Noonan. She moved with her family to a farm southwest of Noonan, in Coalfield Township, where she attended school through grade six. Patricia then attended Columbus Junior High and High School, graduating in 1951. She furthered her education by attending Minot State University and St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Minot.

On April 10, 1953, Patricia was united in marriage to Dennis Horntvedt at the Columbus Lutheran Parsonage. They made their home on the Horntvedt family farm, where Patricia and Dennis raised their two sons and two daughters. In addition to assisting her husband with the operations of the farm, Patricia also worked for the Columbus Public School, where she was the secretary to the superintendent and was also the clerk of the school district. She retired in 1981.

In the fall of 1997, Dennis and Patricia began spending the winters in their home in Minot, returning to the farm for the summers. On May 19, 2011, Dennis passed away. Following his death, Patricia moved in to Edgewood Vista in Minot.

Patricia was very active in several civic, school and church organizations. She served as a member of the Columbus School Boosters and the Trinity Lutheran Church women's group. She was secretary for the Western Prairie Conference of the American Lutheran Church, secretary for Northwestern Plains Region of the AALC, and served as a church secretary for numerous years. She also served as church organist for more than 35 years, was the choir director for more than 10 years, taught Sunday school and was a piano instructor for numerous years, teaching many children including all four of her own. Her musical abilities were enjoyed by others, even as she resided at Edgewood Vista.

Aside from being a devoted wife and mother, faith, church and music were highlights throughout her lifetime. Her infectious smile and laughter were always present, even in the difficult times. She willingly gave of herself to others, demonstrating generosity and selflessness, thereby setting an example for generations to come.

On Aug. 5, Patricia suffered a series of strokes for which she was hospitalized, and was transferred to Trinity Homes in Minot on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Her children, grandchildren, other family and friends spent time by her side until her death.

She will be greatly missed by all.

Patricia is survived by: daughters, Deborah (Kevin) Wlodarski, of Temperance, Mich., and Janine (Dan) Johannes, of Underwood; sons, Kent, of Columbus, and Wayne (Kay Edwards), of Minneapolis; four granddaughters, Andrea (Brian) Kalis, Kelly (Joshua) Mau, Marissa Horntvedt and Eden Johannes; two grandsons, Justin (Bethany) Hughes and Jordan (Aaron) Hughes; four great-grandchildren, Sophie Kalis, Lillie Kalis, Lexie Mau, and Zachary Mau; brothers, Kenneth (Marianne) Bourdeau, Dillworth, Minn., Gerald Bourdeau, Lafayette, Ind., Roger (LaVonne) Bourdeau, of Austin, Texas; and sisters, Dorothy (Walter) Osier, of Clinton, N.Y., and Shirley Engstrom, Williston.
