Lloyd Mergel

Lloyd Lenard Mergel, 81, Minot, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at home with his wife and son by his side, after a long illness of pulmonary fibrosis.

Lloyd was born on Feb. 2, 1932, at home on the Bartz farm in rural Anamoose, the son of Defon and Kaia (Larsen) Mergel. He was raised and attended school in Anamoose.

Lloyd started working for the railroad in 1948 and worked there until 1952, when he entered the Marine Corps. While in the Marines, Lloyd was stationed on the West Coast, East Coast and also in Hawaii for two years. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in September of 1955. After his service Lloyd returned to work for the railroad until he was laid off in November of 1957. He went to work in the oil field in the summer of 1958 until June of 1959. Lloyd moved to Oregon in 1959, where he worked construction and at a local sawmill.

On June 8, 1963, Lloyd was united in marriage to Marydell Harvey Crowder in Cove, Ore. The couple had one son, Defon Jesse. Lloyd was called back to the railroad in 1967 so he moved his family back to North Dakota. Lloyd and Marydell were divorced in 1974.

Lloyd moved to Anamoose in1975 and moved into Minot in 1978. On July 19, 1980, he married Cherie Ann Lyson. The couple made their home in Minot, where Lloyd owned and operated a fish and bird pet shop in the basement of their home until 1984. Lloyd retired from the railroad in 1994.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, square dancing, playing cards, baseball, softball, watching sports on television, bowling, even later in life with his oxygen tank, and visiting with family and friends. Lloyd was a member of the Moose Lodge, Moose Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS, North American Hunting and Fishing Club, a former member of Merry Mixers Square Dance Club, Prairie Rose Plus Club and Souris Valley Dancers.

Lloyd is survived by: his wife of 33 years, Cherie; son, Defon J. Mergel Sr., of Oklahoma; stepson, Ricky (Harriet), Crowder, of Ohio; stepdaughters, Glenda Crowder, of Oklahoma, Edna (Dan) Naniga, of Wisconsin, and Deb (Mark) Kutak; grandchildren, Lloyd L. (Miranda) Mergel, Amber (Matt) Kessler, Defon J. Mergel Jr. and Kaia Mergel; 10 stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren, Zachary Mergel, Brier Kessler and Riley Mergel; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; brother, Allen Mergel, of Oregon; sisters, Margaret Budeau, of North Dakota, Mona Weninger, of Saskatchewan, Carol (Jerry) Olson, of N.D., Alice Alme, of Minnesota, and Vicky Crisman, of N.D.; brother-in-law, Harlan Hayes, of N.D., and Conrad Bachmeier, of Oregon; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Calvin and Bill; and sisters, Ruby Mergel, Darlene Hayes, June Baragry and Twila Bachmeier.

Funeral service: Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 502-17th St, NW, Minot.

Visitation: Monday, Aug. 12, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m., both at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home-Minot.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
