Three military veterans from Minot received their medals from Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., Thursday at a presentation in the Ward County Courthouse in Minot.
Hoeven honored Lyder Nord, a Korean War-era veteran, and Douglas Benjamin and Franklin Eklund Jr., both Vietnam veterans, for their services in the Army. Eklund and Nord had the military ranks of sergeant and Benjamin, specialist.
"These are three great patriots," said Hoeven.
Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., left, talks to three Minot veterans and their family and friends after he presented the veterans their military medals. “These are three great patriots,” he said. The veterans are, from the left, Douglas Benjamin, Franklin Eklund Jr. and Lyder Nord. The presentations were held in the Ward County Courthouse in Minot Thursday.
The presentation was held in the Ex-Servicemen's Room, with family and friends attending.
Hoeven said he was honored to recognize the three for their service to this country.
Nord, who was born at Churchs Ferry, served in the military from February 1952 to February 1954. He said he had never received his medals.
Eklund, who was born in Kenmare and grew up in Tioga, was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. He said he lost one of his medals in the 2011 Souris River flood but he had never received the other medals that were presented to him Friday
Benjamin, who was born in Minot, enlisted in the Army in 1967 and served until 1973. He lost his military medals in the Souris River flood and received replacement medals.
After the flood, Benjamin and his wife have completely rebuilt their home, Hoeven said.
Nord was presented two medals: the Army Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Benjamin received the Bronze Star Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster and letter "V" device, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and Sharpshooter badge with rifle bar.
Eklund received the Army Commendation Medal with letter "V" device, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and Sharpshooter Badge with auto rifle bar with rifle bar.
Hoeven's office worked with the three veterans to obtain the medals that they had earned while in the military.
