Harold Michels

Harold Francis Michels, 63, Minot, passed away Aug. 6, 2013, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Harold and his twin, Gerald, were born June 1, 1950, in Devils Lake, the sons of Alphonse and Frances (Nosbusch) Michels. Harold and his twin brother began school at the Anne Carlsen School in Jamestown when they were just 4 years old. He was a resident of the school from 1954 until his graduation in 1972. Harold attended Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake for one year before moving to Grand Forks and attending the University of North Dakota where in 1984 he received a degree in social services and a minor in rehab services.

Upon graduation Harold returned to Devils Lake, where he resided until 1997, when he moved into Accessible Spaces Apartments in Minot. In 2007, Harold moved to Trinity Homes in Minot. He was very involved in the disabled community in North Dakota and was instrumental in the UND Campus becoming accessible to the handicapped students.

Harold was very proud of his friendship with Mel Tillis. Mel and Harold met in 1976, at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot, where Mel brought sparkle and meaning back to Harold's life. The two have continued their friendship all these years.

Harold was very close to his family and thankful for all of his caregivers he's had over the years.

Harold is survived by: his twin brother, Gerald (Debby); nieces, Lisa, Amy, and Kristin; and two great-nephews, Dryden and Weylin.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 707-16th Ave. SW, Minot.

Visitation: Sunday, Aug. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., with prayer service and recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Monday, at 2:30 p.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake.
