Vistas drop doubleheader to Fargo
FARGO - The Minot Vistas American Legion baseball team entered Wednesday's doubleheader with Fargo needing just a split to clinch the No. 2 seed in the state tournament.
Instead, the Vistas (24-20, 10-8) will be the No. 5 seed after dropping both games of the doubleheader. Minot lost the opener 6-4 before falling 5-4 in 12 innings. The Vistas mustered just five hits in the 12-inning contest.
"We didn't hit the ball at all," Vistas coach Todd Larson said. "We got too worried about the umpires and what others (the Fargo players) were saying. We didn't focus on ourselves."
Fargo's Andrew Beyer ended Minot's hopes of grabbing the No. 2 seed with a two-out, RBI single up the middle in the 12th, plating Casey Quinlan for the game-winning run.
Casey Ryan suffered the loss, tossing 5 2?3 innings of relief after pitching a frame in game one. Hunter Oothoudt paced Minot's offense, finishing 4 for 9 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Mack homered in game one.
Minot and Fargo meet again at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the first round of the state tournament in West Fargo.
"Both of the games were hotly contested and I expect nothing less on Wednesday," Larson said. "Both teams have a distinct dislike for each other."

Beulah cruises to Section 7 title
WASHBURN - The Beulah American Legion baseball team appears ready to host the Class B state tournament this week.
The Cyclones throttled Hazen 10-0 in six innings Saturday to claim the Section 7 championship. Since Beulah was an automatic state qualifier by virtue of hosting the tournament, Hazen will also be in the field as the next-highest finisher from the section.
Beulah posted seven runs in the first inning and cruised from there. Trevor Zacher batted 3 for 4 with a double to pace the Cyclones and Patrick Becker went 2 for 4.
Logan Behm scattered six hits over six innings to earn the win.
