Verna (Henne) Weisser, an 18-month resident of St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 26, at Martin Baptist Church, Martin. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the church.
She was born June 25, 1926, on a farm south of Martin to Adolph and Emma (Schlag) Henne. She graduated from Harvey High School. She taught one year in the Coalmine Lake area, and then became a secretary to the superintendent. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper at the Harvey Co-op Creamery. She was also employed as a secretary to the principal of B.M. Hanson Elementary School for 19 years, where she enjoyed interacting with many teachers, students and parents, and they touched her heart.
She married Alfred Weisser on April 7, 1946, after which they joined the Congregational Church, where they remained very active members until it closed its door in 2000.
Her many hobbies and passions included scrapbooking, maintaining photo albums, genealogy and family history books, and a spoon collection that included all 50 states they had visited in their extensive travels. They also volunteered for Faith in Action for six years, during which they received several Outstanding Volunteer awards. She took great pride in hosting nearly all the family reunions, and spent hours making kuchen, homemade sausage, soup and other cherished German recipes.
She is survived by: her husband of 67 years, Alfred; her brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Isabelle Henne; her children, David (Geneva) Weisser; Nancy Granner; Cindy Weisser; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Verna was preceded in death by her father, Adolph, and mother, Emma, and a son, Loren Weisser.
