Emil Schmidt, 85, of Turtle Lake, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, in the Community Memorial Hospital of Turtle Lake.
Emil was born Sept. 2, 1927, on the family farm near Mercer to John and Mary (Lentz) Schmidt. He enlisted into the Army and served in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1947. He was united in marriage to Esther Knodel, of Ruso, on Feb. 26, 1955. They made their home in Minot where together they raised their four children. Emil worked and retired as a Civil Service carpenter at Minot Air Force Base. After retiring, he and Esther moved to Turtle Lake.
He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Emil had a great passion for shooting pool and was extremely proud of the tournaments and trophies he won over the years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening up until the time of his death.
Emil is survived by his children: Clyde (Nancy) Schmidt, of Minot, Crystal (Kevin) Brown, of Des Lacs, Corey (Donna) Schmidt, of Des Lacs, and Craig Schmidt, of Turtle Lake; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Walker, of Garrison; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; his parents; three brothers, Hilbert, Rueben and Lenard; and one sister, Carrie Fiedler.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 22, at 11 a.m., at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, north of Turtle Lake, with Pastor Curtis Hanson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion Post 133 of Turtle Lake.
Visitation will be held Sunday, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Goetz Funeral Chapel in Turtle Lake.
