Joyce Skjervem, 79, of Bottineau, passed away quietly on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Judy, after a courageous fight against ALS. Her funeral will be held Saturday, June 29, at 1 p.m., at Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Visitation will be Friday, June 28, from 1 to 9 p.m., in Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau. Burial will be at Oak Creek Cemetery in Bottineau.

Joyce Skjervem, a daughter of William and Phyllis (Nicholson) Gillies, was born Aug. 22, 1933, at Bottineau. She graduated from Bottineau High School in 1951 and continued her education at Minot State Teachers College. She went on to teach at Loon Lake School #3, a one-room schoolhouse, from Sept, 17, 1951, until May 29, 1952.

On Dec. 14, 1951, she married Marvin Skjervem at Bottineau. Marriage and raising six children forced her into early retirement from teaching. In 1964, she began her employment with Bottineau County. She worked for five years in the auditor's office and then she began working in the office of the Superintendent of Schools. She retired in 2000 after 36 years of working for Bottineau County, although she did fill in part time at the courthouse when she was needed. Marvin passed away Feb. 5, 2003.

Joyce is survived by: her daughters, Marlene, and her husband, Jim Pulsifer, of Plymouth, N.H., Judy, and her husband, Brian Downes, of Minot, Janice, and her husband, Tom Hanson, of Surrey, and Kathy, and her husband, Rick Ellingson, of Bottineau; one son, Michael Skjervem, of Minot; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie Fulsebakke, of Bottineau, and Betty (Duane) Dahl, of Mission, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen.
