Vernon Pranke

Vernon Donald Pranke, 89, of Fessenden, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at his home.

Vernon was born June 18, 1924, in New Rockford. The son of Frank and Adella Pranke, he grew up on the family farm in Bremen Township. After attending elementary school in rural Bremen, Vernon graduated from Fessenden High School in 1942 and attended the Minnesota School of Agriculture in St. Paul, Minn., for two years.

Vernon entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 15, 1945. He was discharged at Fort Sheridan, Ill., on June 17, 1946, and then resumed farming on the family farm. He married Joyce Strand at Stony Lake Church, rural Minnewaukan, on May 23, 1948. They lived in Bremen Township for 42 years and raised four children before moving to Fessenden in 1990. During their retirement years, Vernon and Joyce enjoyed trips in their motor home visiting family and friends.

Vernon was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bremen. He served on the boards of directors for the Farmers Union Oil Co. and Wells County Farmers Union. He was a member of the Frank Proisl American Legion Post No. 33, Fessenden, as commander and finance officer and served as secretary and vice president of the Wells County Historical Society. Vernon enjoyed fishing in Canada, hunting, auction sales and breakfast at the cafe in Fessenden.

Vernon is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Joyce; daughters, Diane Nelson of Fessenden and Sharon Hass (Jim) of Lynnwood, Wash.; sons, Daryl of the family farm and Kevin (Jodie) of Bemidji, Minn.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Marlys of Papillion, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Vernon's life will be: Thursday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church at Bremen.

Burial will be at Germantown Baptist Cemetery, rural Fessenden. Following the burial there will be a fellowship time for family and friends at the American Legion Hall in Fessenden.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.
