John F. Stevenson, 62, Minot, died unexpectedly Friday, June 21, 2013, while on the Bike the Border tour near Hampden.
John Franklin Stevenson was born April 23, 1951, a son of Clive and Ellen (Sjoquist) Stevenson, at Trinity Hospital in Minot. He was raised on the family farm near Eckman. John attended first grade in a one-room school, then attended Glenburn Public School, where he graduated from Glenburn High School in 1969. He furthered his education by attending the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1973.
On Aug. 20, 1972, John was united in marriage to Nancy Christianson at the Lakeside Chapel at Lake Metigoshe. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Grand Forks, where John worked for First National Bank.
On Jan. 30, 1979, they moved to Minot, where he was employed with First Western Bank, Production Credit Association (PCA), and with Midwest Federal Savings and Loan as an ag loan officer until its closure. From 1992, to present day, John has been involved with the Farm Credit System, currently working for Farm Credit Services of Minot. John also assisted his father and uncle with the operations of the family farm, eventually taking over.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. In 1989, John started cycling, and became quite an enthusiast. He had ridden every Bike the Border since its inception in 2004. Since 2003, John has been active with CANDISC as well. Traveling, especially road trips with Nancy, reading, ice fishing and hunting were things he also enjoyed.
John was a past member of the Minot Lions Club, the Minot Y's Men Club, and since 1979, a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he served in various capacities within the church council. He was a very proud and active member of the Heritage Singers of Minot, since 1994, and formed many close friendships within the group.
John was a man of few words with a quiet strength, quick wit and integrity.
Those Who Shared In His Life: Wife of 40 years, Nancy, Minot; three children, Kristin (Corey) Klinefelter, Grand Rapids, Minn., and their children, Kamryn, Sophie and Claire; Sara (Aaron) Hale, El Segundo, Calif., and their children, Owen, Maxwell, Evelyn, Townsend and Paige; and Erin (George) Reisdorf, Grand Forks, and their children, George Franklin and Samuel; siblings, Sharon (Howard) Moldenhauer, Mandan, Shirley (Myron) Faa, Bottineau, Cathy (Arnold) Langehaug, Glenburn; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tilfred and Maxine (Beehler) Christianson, Minot; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service: Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
Visitation: Tuesday, June 25, from 2 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, with a family prayer service in the chapel of Thompson-Larson Funeral Home at 7 p.m.
