Kenneth Rugland, 86, Palermo, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, in a Stanley nursing home. His funeral service is scheduled for Friday, June 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Faith Lutheran Church, Palermo. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation is today, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.
Kenneth Julius Rugland was born Sept. 18, 1926, to Gunder and Johanna (Kvamme) Rugland, in Burke Township, Mountrail County, N.D. He attended Burke Township Country School No. 1 through the eighth grade. He began farming at age 14 on the family farm, using a four-horse hitch to plow. During those years, Kenneth took the horse team to neighboring farms to haul bundles to the threshing machines. He spent his entire life on the family farm until moving to Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley in February 2012.
One of the highlights of his life was a trip to Norway in the 1970s to visit the birthplace of his parents and to meet his Norwegian family members. Kenneth was always willing to help his neighbors, his community and church.
Kenneth was a lifetime member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was also a member of Farmers Union, the Golden Age Club of Stanley and the Sons of Norway. He served on the church council and Burke County Township Board.
He is survived by: his sister, Bernice Stoland, Minot; brother, Gordon Rugland, Palermo; nieces, Vonee (Rugland) Pawlowski, Geri (Rugland) Finks and Debbie Kotasek; nephews, Blaine Kotasek and Greg Rugland; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Beverly Rugland and brother-in-law, Millard Stoland.
