Lois Hovland was born on Nov. 25, 1936, in Harvey. She was the daughter of Juel and Selma (Seltvedt) Hovland. Lois grew up in Harvey and graduated from Harvey High School in 1954. Lois attended one year of college at Minot State University.

Lois and Alan Schale were united in marriage on July 3, 1956, in Harvey. They lived on a farm in Pony Gulch Township, south of Harvey. They moved into Harvey in 1967. They had four children, Vicki, Jeff, Kim and Wendy.

Lois enjoyed many forms of art to include painting and cross-stitching. God blessed her with a lovely voice and she participated in a wide variety of musical performances in the community throughout the years. She also enjoyed following Bison football and many Harvey High School athletic teams.

In these past few years, she and Alan would take daily drives around the countryside and both of them thoroughly enjoyed this time together looking at crops and seeking out wildlife. They also enjoyed many years at Lake Sakakawea fishing and time spent with friends.

Alan would say God blessed him with the best partner ever. She was very active as they established their farming operation and her partnership in raising a family meant that she was selfless when it came to the needs of her children and grandchildren. They always came first.

Lois received a heart transplant in 1993 and her family is very grateful for the 20 years this provided for them to develop many fond memories. She began dialysis treatments in 2008, first traveling to Bismarck. In 2011 she began home hemodialysis and her dear friend Beth Huseth provided the most loving care one can imagine and they found a way to spend this time with many hours of laughter and joy.

Lois was a member of the New Life On Main Church in Harvey. She was also a member of the Friendly Neighbors Homemakers Club and enjoyed the fellowship and many activities they took on.

Although her family is very grateful for the life we shared, we are thankful she is no longer suffering here on earth and is now walking with Jesus.

Lois will be dearly missed by: her husband, Alan, of Harvey; three daughters, Vicki and Dave Peterson, of West Fargo, Kim and Leslie "Porky" Moen, of Harvey, Wendy Schale, of Fargo; four grandchildren, Addie Sholl, Andrew Sholl, Matthew Sholl and Henry Schale, all of Fargo; and one great-grandchild, Jacob Wesley.

Lois was preceded in death by her father, Juel, on Dec. 4, 1982, mother, Selma on March 16, 2010; and son, Jeff, on July 25, 2009.
