Kids who wear their helmets could be rewarded with a free coupon for a Dairy Queen ice cream cone if law enforcement officers with the Minot Police Department, Ward County Sheriff's Office, Surrey Police Department or Burlington Police Department see them.
The law enforcement agencies are participating in the statewide "I Got Caught!" Program, a program initiated by AAA, Dairy Queen and the North Dakota Sheriffs Association, NOrth Dakota Chiefs of Police Association and Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead. The program's goal is to encourage helmet use to cut down on injuries and save lives. All four of Minot's Dairy Queens are participating in the program.
During the summer months, children across North Dakota will be rewarded with a free DQ ice cream cone when spotted wearing a helmet while riding a bike, skateboard, scooter, or wearing inline skates. When "caught", law enforcement will "cite" the child by issuing them a mock "ticket." The ticket will include a coupon for a small ice cream cone at participating Dairy Queen Restaurants.
