WEST FARGO - The Bishop Ryan softball team took advantage of four Dickinson miscues en route to a 4-0 win in a Class A state tournament semifinal Friday at Elmwood Park.
The win sets up a rematch of last year's championship game with four-time defending state champion West Fargo. The Packers beat Bismarck Century 2-1 on a walk-off hit in the first semifinal.
Ryan sophomore pitcher Hannah Stewart had eight strikeouts in the win and helped her cause with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Dickinson junior Haley Butterfield was the losing pitcher.
Bishop Ryan junior Sydney Marmon drives a single down the left-field line in the fourth inning of the Lions' state semifinal game against Dickinson on Friday in West Fargo. Marmon scored on an RBI single by classmate McKenzie Ebert to give Ryan a 2-0 lead.
Sam Smith, Ryan's lone senior, scored twice. Smith hit a single in the second inning, advanced on a stolen base and then a throwing error. She scored on a wild pitch to give Ryan a 1-0 lead.
The Lions added two more runs in the fourth inning on singles from Stewart and junior McKenzie Ebert. Smith scored again in the fifth inning in similar fashion.
She was hit by a pitch and again stole second to draw a throwing error from the Dickinson catcher. Smith scored from third on a fielder's choice by junior Brieann Backes.
The Lions and Packers will play at 6 p.m. tonight. West Fargo won last year's pitchers' duel 1-0 in eight innings.
